For your consideration is this vintage postcard of Lock #34 and Towpath Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Harpers Ferry, WV Lock #34 and Towpath on the old Chesapeake & Ohio Canal in Maryland near Harpers Ferry. The Canal ran along the Potomac River from Georgetown, D.C., to Cumberland, MD. Traffic consisted of barges pulled by mules. Begun in 1828 and completed in 1851, the Canal was a financial failure because of rail competition and repeated floods and finally abandoned in 1924. The number in the lower left corner on the back of the card is 21268. Published by D.E. Traub of Baltimore, MD. The postcard measures 5 9/16 inches by 3 1/2 inches. The card was postmarked June 24, 1967 in Martinsburg, WV. Shipping is free via first class mail.
